Classic Apple Crisp

An apple crisp on a cozy fall day is pretty close to perfection. It would even be great at thanksgiving if you don’t want to mess around with pie crusts. I use 1/2 tart apples like Pink Lady or Granny Smith and 1/2sweet apples (like Fugi, Gala or Envy) to give it a little depth of flavor. Serve it with barely sweetened whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Add some warm (homemade or store bought) caramel sauce if you want to take it over the top....

Classic Apple Crisp

Ingredients

  • 8 apples, peeled, cored & cut into 1/2” chunks
  • Juice of 1 lemon⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • 2 Tbs sugar⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  •  2 1/4 cup rolled oats⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • 3/4 c white sugar⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • 3/4 c brown sugar⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • 3/4 c flour⁣⁣⁣
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter, cut into 1/2” cubes⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ (slightly soft)
  • 2 tsp vanilla⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  • 1/4 tsp salt⁣⁣⁣⁣

Method

  1. In a bowl, mix apples with lemon juice, 2 Tbs sugar and cinnamon.
  2. Pour into greased 9”X13” baking pan. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  3. To make the topping add remaining ingredients to bowl (use the same bowl the apples were in - no need to clean it.)
  4. Use your hands to work butter into flour, oats and sugar until mixture is crumbly. ⁣⁣
  5. Pour over apples, place dish on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes, until topping is golden and bubbling around edges. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  6. Let cool slightly before serving with whipped cream or ice cream. ⁣If serving the next day, cover with foil and leave at room temp over night. ⁣⁣⁣
